UK genome project: should DNA be kept private, or open-source?
The UK Personal Genome Project, a local spinoff of the U.S. initiative, is setting out to sequence the genomes of 100,000 volunteers, mimicking the goal of the government-owned firm Genomics England. The major difference between the two initiatives is the way in which the data will be stored. The UK Personal Genome Project plans to make data from their results freely available online, creating an open-access model to genetic information, while Genomics England plans to hide its data behind the National Health Service firewall and sell access to researchers.
