Embryonic stem cells provide hope for treating the blind
Scientists have successfully treated blindness in mice, by integrating lab grown light-sensitive retinal cells into the eyes of the blind mice. The light-sensitive nerve cells, called photoreceptors, were grown by scientists from embryonic stem cells. Loss of these nerve cells is the primary cause of blindness for age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and diabetes-related blindness.
