Scientist granted U.S. patent for fraudulent stem cell research
Korean researcher Hwang Woo-suk, who was fired from his university and convicted of criminal charges for fraudulent stem cell research, has been awarded a U.S. patent for the discredited research. Woo-suk had claimed to have extracted a stem cell line from cloned human embryos, which could be used to treat diseases in the patient from which the stem cell line was cloned. In 2006, a panel at Woo-suk’s university concluded that his research was fraudulent.
The patent covers a human embryonic stem cell line derived from cloning and the method used for obtaining the cells, with a condition that Woo-suk agree to make the cell line available for other researchers to investigate.
